Landing a first job is hard because every listing seems to ask for experience. The way through is to replace "years of experience" with proof: projects, internships, certifications and a clear story. This guide shows how to build that proof and put it in front of the right people.
Step 1: Pick a direction
Generic profiles get ignored. Choose a role family such as software development, data analytics, QA, support, design, sales or operations, and tailor everything to it. You can broaden later; for the first job, focus beats breadth.
Step 2: Build proof of skills
- Projects: Two or three solid projects with a short description, tech used and a link to the code or a demo.
- Internships and freelancing: Even short or unpaid work counts if you can describe what you delivered.
- Certifications and courses: Useful when they match the job description, but never a substitute for projects.
- Open-source and communities: Small contributions show you can collaborate.
Step 3: Write a resume recruiters can scan
Keep it to one page, put skills and projects near the top, and use the same keywords as the job description. Avoid photos, tables and fancy columns that confuse applicant tracking systems. Our guide to resume tips for IT jobs in India shows a layout that works.
Step 4: Find fresher openings
- Campus placement: Treat it seriously, but do not depend on it alone.
- Off-campus drives: Many IT services and product companies run fresher hiring year-round. Follow their careers pages and notification channels.
- Job portals: Use Doogler job search and filter by experience level and city.
- Referrals: Ask seniors, alumni and employees. We explain how in How to Get a Job Referral in India.
Step 5: Prepare for interviews
Fresher interviews usually test fundamentals, problem solving and communication. Revise core subjects for your role, practise explaining your projects in two minutes, and rehearse common HR questions such as "Tell me about yourself" and "Why should we hire you?". Use the AI mock interview for realistic practice and feedback; our preparation guide shows how to get the most from it.
Step 6: Think about location
Hiring clusters in a few cities, and where you apply affects how many options you have. Read our guide to jobs in Bangalore, Noida and Delhi NCR to see what each market offers.
Common first-job mistakes
- Applying everywhere with one generic resume.
- Waiting for the "perfect" role instead of a good first step.
- Paying agents or "consultancies" promising guaranteed jobs. Genuine employers do not charge candidates.
- Not following up politely after interviews.
